Orangerie Events on WCNC-TV – Planning a Galentine’s Party

Video: WCNC-TV

Heart-shaped chocolates and candlelit dinners with your significant other may totally be your thing, but if you’re looking for a holiday that celebrates the bond and love between girlfriends, then let us introduce you to Galentine’s Day.

If you aren’t a fan of Parks and Recreation then you may be clueless as to what this fictional holiday is. And if you are clueless and you aren’t celebrating it then you’re totally missing out.

Galentine’s Day is a holiday Amy Poehler’s Parks and Rec character Leslie Knope created that occurs every year on February 13, the day before Valentine’s Day. As Leslie herself explains on the show:

“Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it. Ladies celebrating ladies.”

If you’re celebrating Galentine’s Day this year with your leading gal pals, here are three tips for making sure you’re the hostess with the mostess.

1. The Decorations
Even if you’re hosting the celebration in the comfort of your own home, don’t skimp on the setting. A custom linen, a fresh floral centerpiece and an established color scheme will instantly elevate your stay-at-home party from drab to fab. Since you are acknowledging a holiday that celebrates all things girl power, play it up with bright colors or let fun props serve dual purposes such as unicorn plush animals acting as place cards.

2. The Sips
Champagne is always a good idea. Stock your bar cart with a variety of champagne, juice and fruit options for your girls to mix and match. Consider having a signature drink like a Cotton Candy Champagne Cocktail. Simply place a bit of cotton candy inside your glass. Add a splash of St. Germain and then fill to the top with champagne. This drink is certain to be a conversation starter and is as simple as it is sweet.

3. The Favors
Don’t let your B.F.Fs leave empty-handed. And what girl doesn’t smile when receiving a bouquet of flowers? Put together a couple small bouquets of fresh flowers to give as takeaways. To incorporate and keep with the Galentine’s theme, we printed these floral wraps and adorned each bouquet with a girly-themed pin. You can never go wrong with fresh tulips and your leading ladies will appreciate the attention to detail and thoughtfulness.

We all know that Valentine’s Day is all about the romance. But whether you’re single, in a relationship or are checking the “it’s complicated” box, celebrate and show appreciation to the most important loves in your life, your girlfriends.

Orangerie Events Top Southern Wedding Planner by Southern Living Magazine

“There is only one way to avoid criticism: do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing.” -Aristotle

There’s a level of unparalleled anxiety which envelopes my entire human form when I see the email subject “You’ve Received a Review” pop up. My hands begin to sweat. I start shaking my leg nervously. There’s a 50/50 chance as to what the outcome will be and the only way to see if I’ve hit the jackpot or need to file bankruptcy is by clicking “open.”

Honesty hasn’t been my finest attribute in the past but in regards to this particular subject, I do feel it’s the best policy. So here’s full disclosure: I don’t have all 5-star reviews because I haven’t always given 5-star service. I know. Pick your jaw up off the floor and keep reading. Maybe you’re thinking if I would just do my job and do it well then every review would be glowing. I would tell you I’ve tried. It’s not like I plot ways to piss off people. I don’t plan on coordinators quitting and leaving me in a bind. I don’t plan on houses to burn down leaving me stretched thin and in two places at once. I intend to respond to emails as quickly as possible and then you know what has the audacity to interfere? Life.

As a small business owner and one in a highly emotionally charged industry, I have always operated under principle. I’ve listened to complaints and feedback and I’ve tried to modify workflows and systems to do better. I’ve offered and given refunds despite contractual obligations. I’ve been cussed because I started a ceremony three minutes after the time noted on the invitation. I’ve been publicly defamed and slandered based on stories that are completely one-sided and far from factual.

Reviews are a double-edge sword. They can make you and they can break you. And the caveat is the scale isn’t equally weighed. It takes 50 favorable reviews to outweigh one negative Nancy. So how the heck does this have anything to do with Southern Living Magazine naming me as a Top Southern Wedding Planner? It’s proof that it’s okay to be human. You can be perfectly imperfect. You can make mistakes. You can accumulate a few less than stellar performance evaluations or get removed from a venue’s vendor list even though you’ve coordinated more than 40 weddings at their property. You can learn and grow and persevere and eventually your hard work is going to be recognized by someone or something more notable than user “AnonymouslyMarried17” online.

So here’s my acceptance speech for this honor bestowed upon me by Southern Living Magazine. To those clients who took the time to fill the interwebs with positive vibes and words of gratitude for our experience working together – I thank you. I hang onto your words and I use it as motivation for future clients. To those clients who were rightfully disappointed because something or someone distracted me from my role as your planner – I apologize. You deserved better and I’m sorry I didn’t meet your expectations. And lastly, to those pseudo clients who feel it necessary to bash my business or slander me personally with misinformation and inaccurate accounts of interactions – I pray for you. I pray you never really experience disappointment in the form of losing a loved one or suddenly waking up to find yourself a single parent with a disassembled life. I pray you don’t have to be tragically reminded that the world doesn’t revolve around you or dare I say it, your wedding day.

In case you didn’t know, you can’t make everyone happy. And there comes a point, especially when owning a small business and even more so as a wedding planner, when you realize you’ll never be good enough for some people. And maybe that’s your problem but maybe, just maybe, it’s theirs. And do you know who thinks I’m a pretty rad wedding planner despite my faults and shortcomings? Southern freaking Living Magazine.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of such a special day for Whitney + David.

Their wedding embodied everything they loved – amazing friends + family, a jaw dropping backdrop, yummy cupcakes, delicious food, beautiful vintage pieces, the most adorable first look, and so much more. But, of course the night wasn’t complete without a huge tropical storm dancing through. Don’t worry – that didn’t stop the party. Everyone danced, laughed, and smiled through the rain!

This day couldn’t have been possible without an amazing team of vendors. We are so happy to share the beautiful photos with you and our recent feature on Southern Weddings. If you want to learn more about Whitney + David, their love story, vision behind the day, + more – be sure to click here!

North Carolina Wedding Planner Branding Video

I knew it was time for a new branding video. My life has changed significantly since the last one was filmed. And as with life, it is ever-changing. However, I no longer work out of the office in Wake Forest which means I don’t ride my bike down the middle of Main Street (not that I really did any other time than the day of that shoot), the style of weddings I plan has evolved and I no longer live in the house featured in my last film. I do still wear a fedora, shop at Forever 21 and I still ask Scottie to do spins for treats.

When I started thinking about the meaning I wanted the new branding video to portray, I kept coming back to the fact that I’ve really always known this is what I wanted to do. I really didn’t need to look further than my own memories.

As soon as the idea was conceptualized, everything else came naturally. I sat down to write the script and the words poured out of me because I was speaking from experience.  As a little girl, I would frequently look through my parent’s wedding album and dream about my own wedding. I would dress up my stuffed animals and orchestrate an entire wedding day for them and their fluffy friends. I embarrassingly but specifically remember a night in college acting out a mock wedding with some friends. And no, alcohol wasn’t involved. I just really liked weddings.

And now it’s my every day. I eat, sleep and breathe weddings. I get to work with awesome couples and plan one of the most meaningful days of their lives. I’m a front row spectator to their First Look and the last one to tell them goodnight. I’m able to utilize the detail-oriented side of my brain to make sure the place cards are straight and the favors are all facing the same direction and yet I get to use the creative side of my brain to do something unexpected like suspend a three-tier wedding cake.

When I say I was born to do this job, I mean it. I wouldn’t do it day in and day out if I didn’t love it and if it didn’t evoke an immense amount of joy and satisfaction with each conclusion of another wedding. And while I was in my twenties when I ultimately decided what was my life’s purpose and how to fulfill it, if I look back on my life, the clues were always there and I was destined to be on the path I am on today.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped to pull off this video shoot. I couldn’t have done it without their support. And that little 8-year-old star you see pretending to be me as a child is none other than my cousin’s darling little girl Madi. She did such an amazing job and was the most perfect little actress. If you know her and see her after watching this, please be sure to tell her what a movie star she was in this video. (Cute side note: She texted me on Friday and asked “When will my movie be available for the world to see?”)

I hope as you watch this video created by the masterminds at Heart Stone Films, it stirs a fire in you to go out and do what you love. Don’t chase money. Don’t chase recognition. Don’t chase conformity or complacency. Chase your dreams. Life is too short to not do what you know in your heart you should be doing. So turn up your volume and enjoy a snippet of why I do what I do. I hope you fall in love with this little slice of perfection titled “Wide Eyed Little Girl” as much as I have.
